Guelph Black Heritage Society

The mission of the Guelph Black Heritage Society is to restore and maintain the historical BME Church building as a community cultural and spiritual gathering space. GBHS also strives to raise awareness in Guelph of both local and national Black heritage as well as addressing social issues of importance to Black Canadian communities. The Guelph BME (British Methodist Episcopal) Church has stood at 83 Essex Street since 1880. The Guelph BME was built by formerly enslaved Black individuals and their descendants who arrived in the area via the Underground Railroad.
