Happy Monday Plant People!

This week I will be featuring 4 reasons to have positive plant connections whether outside or in! Stay tuned each morning for a new topic to discuss! Happy planting!

Air Purification

Can having plants in the home really help with air quality? This is something I’m confident most people have heard about either in passing or from their local plant providers. How exactly does this work though and how effective can your houseplants be at cleaning your air?
Simply put, plants are able to absorb gases through their leaves by surface pores. This process facilitates a plants main objective to photosynthesize! Converting sunshine and CO2 into usable energy! This is the basis of primary life on Earth. While plants are highly efficient at absorbing CO2 they also uptake other gases like ‘volatile organic compounds’ or VOCs. Benzene (found in some dish detergents, fabric softener, pesticides and cigarette smoke) and formaldehyde (found in some cosmetics, dish detergent, fabric softener and carpet cleaners) are examples of VOCs that can be found in the home. Studies have shown that plants can also clean these volatiles from our air! Neutralizing toxins in soil, air, and water is called ‘phytoremediation’.

The Peace Lily ‘Spathiphyllum’ and some ferns like 'Boston' for instance have been found to be one of the most effective at cleaning household air of VOCs.

Now given all this information, there are still a few things that should be noted. The original study done by NASA that looked into the air purification skills of plants was done in a closed chamber. Results showed that 'cleaning' results were not as high/efficient when in normal "Earth" conditions. Another video I will link below mentions the need for cleaning plant leaves and using specific amendments to produce the best purifying results.

Personally, I think that even though my plants might not be doing the most efficient job of clean my household air I'm sure the more I have in the house the better their chances are. Meaning the more the merrier... Something, I'm sure every plant enthusiast loves to hear!

If you want to read more on how plants can effectively clean the air in your home I'll add some links below. Have a great Monday everyone!
